The Sign's Up-Side-Down, Again

Eagle Security, one of our original sponsors, traditionally flips its sign up-side-down as long as the treasure remains hidden.  So, if you get into the neighborhood, and you spot a traffic slow-down on 28th Street in Grand Rapids, MI, it's probably our fault.  28th Street is reputedly the busiest street in Michigan.  Want to learn more about the $1000.00 treasure hunt?  Click here.

Are you Ready to Come Out and Play Mind Games With Me?

Many years ago I discovered the easiest way to turn a task into a project was first to turn it into a game. I found that the fastest and least painful approach to a job was to view it as a contest.

In the end, I wound up turning everything into a Mind Game.

That, in essence, is what this site is all about: Mind Games. Here we turn everything into a contest: You,  against me in other than mortal combat.

Time is a Puzzle

I create the puzzles, and you try to solve them. Some of them will be very difficult, some will be fairly easy. In every case, if you "beat" me, if you are the first to solve a puzzle, I will reward you.

Sometimes the prizes will be in the form of cash, sometimes it will be with specially issued merchandise.

you can rest assured that in every case there will eventually be a winner. Never will I cop a "J. F. Byrne ."

I will provide a stream of progressively revealing clues that will eventually lead you to a successful conclusion. It is by design that no puzzle will remain forever unsolved.

You will find that in every instance my clues are themselves puzzles. Some may run four or more levels deep. In some cases, I will even offer prizes to the first person who is able to solve one of these special clues. (You will know when the solution to a particular clue warrants a prize because these clues will always be preceded by the letters "w" and "c" in parenthesis (wc). This signifies that this clue is a "weighted clue," one whose solution I deem worthy of reward.)

As you proceed through this labyrinth with me, you will at times become frustrated, probably even disenchanted. Certainly you will develop an occasional case of severe brain ache. Just remember, that is good. When you begin to get very angry at me, when you become convinced that I am a troubled person, you are most likely right on the verge of discovery and success.

At any rate, even if you do not beat me the first, second, or even your one-hundredth effort, don’t quit trying. You can always take heart in knowing that I intend to carry nothing to the grave with me, there will be no U-Hauls behind my hearse.

Eventually, all my puzzles will be solved. Just stick in there  and do not give up.

What to Expect

Most of this site is self-explanatory (except for the puzzles, of course). I will always have a number of contests running concurrently. I will always explain where you must go to obtain clues for a given contest (the structure of the different contests will have different requirements, and will take your mind into different venues). There will always be prizes.

For more information regarding the rationale of this site (such as who is "Mountain Mike," and what is "Purplehunt"), click the "Who, What, Why and How" buttons on the masthead. …Then get ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

Mountain Mike's Latest Cerebral Challenge:

(Contest Number 6)

This contest starts 3-8-2000

The newest Purplehunt contest is the "HTML Challenge." Hidden somewhere in the HTML of this site is a mini-puzzle.

Be the first to find it and to solve it, and you will win a signed Purplehunt cap.

Click here for details.  (This is Contest Number 6.)

Play Mountain Mike's "Just For Fun" Games and Puzzles

While this page does offer a bit of a respite from my brain benders, some of the games and puzzles contained on it  are definitely not designed for the "Faint of Heart and Weak of Mind."  Some, of course, are..

These games and puzzles are not the creation of "Mountain Mike."  They have, however, caught my attention due to their originality, superb quality, and fun value.

In all cases I note the game's author and/or source of origin.  In most cases I provide a link.

If you have designed a java game or puzzle, and  you would like me to consider it for promotion under this heading, email me with the URL and I will take a look at it.

The Big Puzzle Contest

(Contest Number 5)

It is designed to follow most of the standard rules.  What makes it stand out is its level of difficulty.  If you are the one to solve this puzzle, you will have done well.  Remember -- eventually every puzzle will be solved.

The prize for the winner is a Purplehunt cap, with $100 (US) tucked into it. Click here for full details.

Solve the Ancient Text Contest

(Contest Number 2)

This contest started 3-8-2000, and has yet not been solved

Here's a challenge for you.  Decipher an ancient text and win a prize.  Click here for details.

Oops!  Did Somebody Say "oops?"

(Contest Number 3)

It is a fact. No one is perfect. Everyone makes an occasional mistake. Even the adroit puzzle maker can botch it.

The "Oops Puzzle Page" testifies to that fact.

In every puzzle or contest that will ever be presented on these pages, there will be an intentional mistake.

The challenge for you: Find the mistake(s), and solve the puzzles.

This puzzle has been under development for some time.  It was finally rolled out on  May 15, 1999.  so far it has survived two generations, and is still going strong.   I will admit that it was a little tricky for me to make a puzzle with mistakes (I kept finding and fixing them!). You may click here for more details.

The Much-Dreaded "Impossible Puzzle"

It is Impossible

(Contest Number 4)

This contest started 3-8-2000

Are the average run-of-the-mill "Mensa" puzzles too easy for you (or for your computer)?

Well, I have the solution. My "Impossible Puzzle" almost lives up to its name.

This contest is designed to be virtually inscrutable. I guarantee that you have never seen a puzzle quite like it. It is off the chart in level of difficulty.

However, you can take solace in the fact that, as is the case with all my contests, this puzzle, my "Impossible Puzzle," will eventually be solved.  This contest has been solved twice already.

Check it out by clicking on the "Impossible Puzzle ."  The prizes for solving this contest have been a new computer, cash!  ...and a Mountain Mike Cap!
